4/9/2010: If you haven't heard (or seen), the West Bay Bike Path is now fully asphalt-paved from Providence through Coventry. I cycled it Thursday and found some areas in Coventry that require a second paving to level the surface with the rest of the path. The scenery through this new area is fantastic, some of it overlooking the Pawtuxet River. Jeff Herman

Who Are the Wholly Rollers?

The Wholly Rollers is a program of the Social Justice Ministry at First Unitarian. In 2008 Jeff Herman, Paul Hossfield, Greg Kniseley, and Wendy Litke raised funds and cycled in the two day 2008 MS 150 Bike Tour. The Wholly Rollers raised $2,960 for the Rhode Island Chapter of Multiple Sclerosis Society to support scientific research for finding a cure for MS and to provide services for Rhode Islanders with MS. RI MS Society raised more than $600,000. Many thanks to First Unitarian members, friends, and family who contributed.

The Steeple Chase (rest stops are at churches). It's sponsored by the Windham Area Interfaith Ministry, and the registration $ goes to good local charities. It's a hilly, scenic century. Four people to register together and get the "family rate" of $60. Otherwise, it's $25 per person pre-registration, or $30 per person the day of the ride. Sign-in is from 7-11 a.m. Call 860/450-7122 for a registration form. Twenty- 50- and 100-mile rides. Free food and drink at every stop (and at the start), plus a sag wagon during the ride. Cold pasta buffet at the end. Visit their Web site. Jeff Herman: This ride offers great chow...chocolate chip cookies, sandwiches, energy bars, fruit, Gatorade, water, etc. at four church stops. Plus, the luxury of REAL restrooms–no portojohns here! Be aware that this ride is VERY hilly, but with fantastic scenery.

Racing

Lincoln, RI
Racing runs from May through August. Located on Powder Hill Rd. in Lincoln Industrial Park. There are two races, both on Wednesdays: a cat 5 race that starts at 6:00 pm and a cat 1/2/3/4 race that starts at 6:30. You can purchase a one-day license just before the race for $7, $35 for the season. The cost for the race itself is $5. There are one-two warm-up laps. The cat 5 race is "coached" with an experienced rider giving pointers. The cat 5 averages well over 20 mph. The race is run in the rain, but not if there's lightening. Feeling Better

Dealing With Lactic Acid by Jeff Herman
Lactic acid buildup–a cyclist's "Achilles heel." I confirmed this technique with my brother (a doctor). To alleviate the pain associated with lactic acid, lie on your back and elevate your feet and legs to about 90 degrees (careful not to overstretch your hamstrings). Stay in this position for 5-10 minutes. By removing the effects of gravity, the lactic acid in the muscles of the legs can more easily enter the bloodstream and be more rapidly metabolized. This technique works for me; it may work for you!
