I started my business in 1984,
and have built this business on a national reputation of quality
craftsmanship with a special sensitivity towards the finishing of
every piece. I have repaired & reconstructed everything from
historically important tankards, tea services, and tureens to disposal-damaged
and dishwasher-dulled flatware. You'll appreciate my spotless dent
removal. Will I repair or polish a single spoon? Absolutely!
Before I started my own business,
I worked at Gorham as a designer, sample maker, and technical
illustrator. Upon leaving Gorham, I took a position at Pilz Ltd.
where I learned the fine art of restoration, and fabricated
mass-produced ecclesiastical ware. I earned a BFA degree in
silversmithing and jewelry making from Maine College of Art in
Portland, where I studied under Harold Schremmer and Ernest Thompson
- two outstanding designer/craftsmen. I am the founder of the Society
of American Silversmiths. You can see my formal resume here. |

Who is Qualified to Work on My Silver? This is probably a question that's gone through your mind when searching the Web for a professional silversmith. There are companies large and small. Companies that specialize in silverplating. Those that have a strict policy of giving each and every piece that pass through their production line a "brand new" appearance. Some companies have splashy Web sites, only to mask their lack of professionalism and craftsmanship. Even some (including most jewelry stores) farm out their most difficult silver repairs! Why Use Herman Silver Restoration? I have been working with silver for 35 years. A large number of pieces coming through my workshop have been poorly repaired by other companies. I would never return a repaired piece that I wouldn't accept myself. Many of my customers are as finicky and obsessive as I am. Feel at ease that your object is being handled by an experienced silversmith, insuring that you receive the absolute highest quality craftsmanship, that includes spotless dent and monogram removal. I have the sensitivity you're looking for, and I hope my Web site (which I created) has made that evident. My work is also guaranteed. Contact me with any questions you can't find answers to on this site. If you have a piece in need of repair, or interested on bidding on a damaged object, feel free to send an image or link to that piece for an estimate (please note if the piece solid silver or silverplate). |
Created in 1995, this 5"tall x 3"diameter sterling vase with 5 cultured pearls was raised from a rectangular sheet of sterling, allowing stress cracks to develop as a design element. The top and side edges are hammer "checked" for thickening and sparkle. Photo: Bill Hicks |
