I ride either 7:30 am or 5:00 pm, but have a flexible schedule and can do afternoons as well. Distance: 25+ miles on the weekdays, 40+ miles on the weekends through Scituate, Foster, and Burrillville, RI, Thompson, CT, and Douglas, MA. I LOVE hills :-) If you're on the road and see a guy with big, hairy legs on a blue Bridgestone RB2, wearing a white helmet, it's probably me. If you're interested in doing some nice hilly biking on a Saturday or Sunday morning; I'll be your personal tour guide :-) through traffic-free Burrillville, Douglas, Glocester, Thompson, and Uxbridge! Call anytime.

I ride to work from Foster to the Howard complex in Cranston. Many routes get me there. Most often I'm running late so I go the most direct way: Rt. 102 to 14 to Pippen Orchard Rd., down across Oaklawn Ave., emerging near the National Guard headquarters, across from Howard Ave. I leave home around 7:15am...any takers? I can vary the route, I just have to get up earlier...ugh! Weekends are always hard to plan for me...so many things to do, so little time!

I usually ride early in the day (6 am to 7 am start). Uxbridge, Douglas, Purgatory, or 44W to 94S, from my house. Or west into CT, usually from 102 & 14 in Scituate. Distance: 25+ miles, average speed: 15+

I have rides from 25 miles to 300 miles cued out. I put the routes together for the Camp Quinebaug Cycling Classic held in Sept. so I have a number of them. Some of the rides go down to Groton Long Point and back. I should be putting on a time trial again this year. It will be held on Green Hollow Road starting in Danielson. The course is a 10.8 north to south run. If you need any help or advice let me know.

Local Upcoming Centuries

August 18, 2001

The Steeple Chase (rest stops are at churches). It's sponsored by the Windham Area Interfaith Ministry, and the registration $ goes to good local charities. It's a hilly, scenic century. Four people to register together and get the "family rate" of $60. Otherwise, it's $25 per person pre-registration, or $30 per person the day of the ride. Sign-in is from 7-11 a.m. Call 860/450-7122 for a registration form. Twenty- 50- and 100-mile rides. Free food and drink at every stop (and at the start), plus a sag wagon during the ride. Cold pasta buffet at the end. Visit their Web site. Jeff Herman: This ride offers good chow...chocolate chip cookies, sandwiches, energy bars, fruit, Gatorade, water, etc. at four church stops. Plus, the luxury of REAL restrooms–no portojohns here! Be aware that this ride is VERY hilly, but with fantastic scenery. Its sore point is mediocre arrowing.

Racing

Lincoln, RI

Racing runs from May through August. Located on Powder Hill Rd. in Lincoln Industrial Park. There are two races, both on Wednesdays: a cat 5 race that starts at 6:00 pm and a cat 1/2/3/4 race that starts at 6:30. You can purchase a one-day license just before the race for $7, $35 for the season. The cost for the race itself is $5. There are one-two warm-up laps. The cat 5 race is "coached" with an experienced rider giving pointers. The cat 5 averages well over 20 mph. The race is run in the rain, but not if there's lightening. If the race is cancelled, it is not rescheduled. If you want more details: EBCC Training Series, David Garneau, 1 DuCarl Dr. Lincoln, RI 02865, 401/333-4875, .

Feeling Better

Dealing With Lactic Acid by Jeff Herman

Lactic acid buildup–a cyclist's "Achilles heel." I confirmed this technique with my brother (a doctor). To alleviate the pain associated with lactic acid, lie on your back and elevate your feet and legs to about 90 degrees (careful not to overstretch your hamstrings). Stay in this position for 5-10 minutes. By removing the effects of gravity, the lactic acid in the muscles of the legs can more easily enter the bloodstream and be more rapidly metabolized. This technique works for me; it may work for you!
